A Disney Movie

I sometimes equate to living here as living in a Disney Movie. We are in a happy place, off in the woods, surrounded by fury friends. Much like this classic:

Yeah, that about gets all of them

Today I took Reese for a walk and immediately we were met with 12 or 13 turkey in the front field. Reese has a special place in her heart for turkeys.

Reese/ Turkey size ratio - 1:1

Then we went up around the hill and saw two deer, they just stared at us then pranced up the hill. They honestly looked like Reese’s older cousins. After watching them jump up the hill I almost jumped out of my skin. I looked next to us and there were four more deer just staring at us, not running away or moving. Dead still. It was a little freaky, but really pretty too. Luckily no turtle sightings, Reese tends to scare them off.

Turtle, meet Reese. She will pounce on you now.

It’s been reported that if you spend 5-10 mins outside each day you can increase your overall mental health. I think this bit of information has been in my subconcious because I’ve been doing a lot of outdoor walks lately. I’ve also been taking this little gem and it’s told me how long I’ve walked!

The exercise has really been helping me deal with some stress and spend some time out in the nice weather. The stress is good stress, exciting things are going on, but nonetheless, it’s stressful. Reading has also been helpful. I just got done reading The Help. It was great! Reading something other than class textbooks is almost like a sweet treat. I’ll have to get another one here soon.

Tonight is Monday night football at camp and we host it; every Monday. So that means I am locked up like Cinderella in my room all night. I think my laundry will keep me busy enough!

Hopefully no mice included!

Time for an update!

So the summer is over and camp has packed up and left us. We are literally still at camp, but the campers are all gone. There are several reasons I took the summer off from updated in the blueg (I hate the word blog, blueg is a barfy sound equivalent that works for me.) I know it would seem that I would want to write the most during summer camp because my title is Camp Wife, but since it’s our last summer here I wanted to really enjoy the summer and not feel obligated to come back and write about every little thing. If I was to highlight a few things that I should have blueged about it would include these:

  • Camp wife dates/town runs/presentation experiences
  • Multiple mice sightings/killings in the house
  • Ranch chicken, and other foods of horror
  • Being a counselor! and taking a week off of work
  • The amazing summer staff
  • Weekend boating trips on the lake
  • Learning how to properly build a fire
  • Smores!
  • Fashions by Dylan – Sam was dressed by another staff member for their Passion Play every week, it was weird
  • Horseflys/bugs/and camp critters
  • Puppy play dates
  • Camp weddings/reunions
  • Gator rides
  • Storms
  • The Canteen
  • And many more adventures

This summer I strived to be involved in the camp life as much as I could. If I didn’t have homework and found myself sitting around I would try to follow Sam around wherever he went. I was able to go to late night camper worships and watch our passion play each week. I really didn’t want to take this summer for granted and so I tried to be as involved as I could.

Now the summer is over and things are starting to transition into retreat season. But first we start off with New Song! This is a Christian music festival that is held all weekend. It’s another reunion for campers and staffers to get together and enjoy worship together. The weekend is host to several concerts and breakout sessions. It’s also host to a Papa Johns pizza trailer in my front yard. Not cool. The temptation of all day pizza is right there. This year though I will be here there and everywhere during New Song. I have to work today so I’ll be getting in a little later, tomorrow I have a board meeting about an hour away, and Sunday I leave for sorority recruitment. So hopefully I’ll be too busy to worry about pizza!!

Next week I’m off to help my sorority with recruitment. I’m sure several interesting posts will come of it!

Gnat paper!!

Camp was successful!! Woo hoo! Our first day went so well, I was very excited with how the day went and how the kids responded to it all. They were very nervous walking into the building, but by the end of the day they were getting along with one another and looking forward to what all is to come. I think it’s going to be a great week!

When I got home I got some super cute puppy play time. Katie and Lulu came over to our back yard and Lulu and Reese ran around like adorable little besties. Lulu kept playing hide and seek under the deck stairs, supa supa cute!!

After play time I waited for Sam to get done so I could say hello to him. Then I waited some more, then a little longer, then finally took matters into my own hands and walked to find him. I was able to see him for a brief period then headed back to the house. Later we drove around on the Gator and invented a Gator Photo Booth with his iPhone. He set his iPhone up on the windshield of the gator so people can jump in and take a photo. It’s fun! But not so fun when you are taking out the trash, it was a stinky ride.

trash. ew.

After getting home I let Reese outside, she previously ate some of the trash so I wanted to check on her to make sure she wasn’t puking everywhere. When I leaned out the kitchen window,  I leaned into something terrible!!!! It’s really my own fault, but terrible none the less. Last week we had a lull in the amount of time we spent washing dishes we were super lazy and left stuff in the sink for far too long. This caused a little bit of a gnat problem. They procreate like bunnies so the situation got out of control really fast. Well we have some gnat paper up around the sink area next to our window to catch them. I obviously forgot about this and leaned straight into it. Immediate thoughts….Oh. My. its Gnat paper!!! I grunted loudly and ran to the bathroom without thinking. I continued to grunt as I washed my hair clean of the sticky gnatty mess. AHH! it was terrible and totally a gross camp thing that would happen!

On a “freaky things that happen at camp” note – I’m pretty sure either A. my dog just knocked on the back door to be let out or B. someone knocked on the backdoor (no one was there when i opened it!!) or C. this place IS HAUNTED!! ahh.. :(

On a lighter note…
I’m now settled freaked out at home with folk dancing music filling my living room and kids cheering from their dancing. And my cousin is here for the week for the first time! Hooray for positives about camp. Tomorrow we have a Camp Wife dinner at the old mexican restaurant in town too! Score!!

Clarity

This weekend has been supa supa busy! I’ve wanted to post about a few different things that have happened but never had the time to do it. So here is a wrap up of the weekend:

Friday was a pretty busy day for me. It started out with work which included group therapy in the morning and one individual session, then prepping for summer camp which starts today!! We had to move all of our supplies from the clinic to the summer camp space that we will be using today. It was a lot of stuff, luckily I have awesome people who work with me and they loaded up their cars and brought it all over :) After work was the real fun though! I headed to BG to reunite with my bestie for some “Bachelorette Party Re-do” events. We had such a blast at her party in Florida, that we wanted to recreate it. Unfortunately, the other ladies had stuff to do over the weekend so the good times were up to us! We started the night with this:

It was so funny! We were laughing the whole time. We thought the story could have been developed a little more, but it was a good flick none the less. After the movie we headed to Raffertys for some drinks and food. Yum! And ended the night with party crashing on the sorority president. I am an advisor for my sorority on campus and the president was having a birthday celebration. I wanted to just run in and see her for a minute and leave so that’s what we did!

Saturday Sam and I were able to hang out with some friends for another b-day celebration. We went to a hibachi grill and saw a movie with everyone. Another fantastic night. And Sunday was full of meetings while Sam prepared for camp. I had an advisory board meeting for the sorority then I had a meeting for students interested in gaining their PHD.

This meeting really interested me because I have kind of thought about the idea of getting a PHD because I feel that in my field you can never get too much education. They type of PHD we discussed was Counselor Education. This degree preps you to be a professor. We discussed the ins and outs of the programs and the nitty gritty that can really freak you out. It was very very helpful though.

The meeting helped me gain some clarity with the direction I want to go in. I don’t think that getting a PHD, at least that type, is in the cards for me. I really enjoy my work and being actively involved with people. I don’t think I will be fulfilled working as a professor. Working part time, teaching a class here and there would be nice, and something I’d like to check out, but full time teaching isn’t exactly for me.

I am really grateful that I was able to go and discuss my concerns and questions at the meeting. It was very small group of us, just four students and two faculty, so we were able to really ask questions that were on our minds. This helped me figure out the direction I want, at this point, for my life.

I am very excited about the possibilities of the future and somewhat excited that, at this point, it doesn’t include a dissertation! Haha!!

Today is the first day of camp at work :) Prayers are welcome!!

ugh.

I. am. sick. ugh… I woke up at about 4:30 this morning and haven’t felt good since then. My stomach is making terrible noises. One minute it sounds like a pinball machine and the next an earthquake. My innerds are all jittery inside and they kinda all feel slanted, a little off-balance. ugh.

This might be for a couple of reasons 1. I had camp food last night for the first time in a long time. Now our camp doesn’t serve bad food, but I’m just not used to it. 2. I ate a few oreo balls for dessert. One of the female staffers made oreo balls for all the camp wives since we made them cookies. Fair trade! I didn’t know I’d feel like this today when I took these shots yesterday….

Baked spaghetti...are you the reason my tummy feels like a hurricane??

Or was it you, you delicious little oreo balls...

Since my jobs calls for constant human interaction and full attention to their every thought and body language, I figured I needed to stay home today. I can’t worry about what’s going on with my insides while trying to help others. So I’m just spending the day half sleeping, half awake with little poochie girl.

and her massive tongue!

I have, however, really enjoyed this week! I haven’t had a whole lot of contact with the campers other than Sunday night dinner and seeing them through the front windows. I have, however, had some time with some of the staff. I was able to have a long convo with one of the girls this week. She is struggling with a lot of some of the same things I went through when I was on staff. For any of you praying people out there, she could use some prayers.

Last night was kind of interesting as well. The staff holds a “Presentation Night” each week for the campers showing them the passion play. I really wanted to attend but was unable to because I had lots of homework to complete. I ended up having to go to the camp office to print everything out because our home printer is low on ink. Once I walked in the door around 10 I got a phone call from Sam. There was something going on with one of the campers and he wanted some insight on what the issue might be. I went over to the campsite where they were staying and the little girl was just having a tough night. She had some difficulties throughout the week and had a lot going on for her. I wanted to try to help but it was very late and she wasn’t interested in meeting anyone new, and that’s ok. She had made a relationship with her dean and he was able to diffuse the problem and let those who needed to know about it stay informed.

Camp is a very busy place. Not only are kids coming and going all the time but they all come in with their own story. The campers are much more complex than we are sometimes able to see. What drives them to misbehave or call out for attention may be a deficit for them in their home life. I wish we were able to have more time with the campers, but I know they get a lot out of their experiences that they have here and that’s the best thing we can give them. And we always have the ability to pray for them once they leave.

Random side note: back to the tummy…Sam just came home for lunch and made tuna, tuna! Who does that. Now I feel extra sick, eww.

First Day of Camp!!!

I must have the first day of camp jitters because last night I had a terrible nightmare about camp. I’m not going to share it because it was that scary. But, I’ve shaken off the night terrors and I have started the morning with a good swim with a fellow camp wife! So things will be better! It was so nice to be able to get in some fun exercise this morning. And the weather was perfect. I’ve recently been setting my alarm to say *sweat everyday* to help keep my mantra alive, and so far it’s been working!

I’m really looking forward to this summer for our camp staff. I have really enjoyed the time that I have been around them. They are very warm and welcoming young people. This group seems really united and I think they are going to do great things. I totally hijacked this picture from the internet..don’t tell :) (hence the iPhone outline around it, hehe!)

Wild & Crazy Kids!!!

Here is what Sam’s staff picture turned out to look like..

Family foto!

Katie and I had the pleasure of meeting some of the new female staffers after a worship last Sunday. I had Sam tell them to all hang around and we introduced ourselves. They had a sigh of relief when we got up there because they said they thought they were in trouble for something! Nope, not in trouble, just wanted to meet them :) We let them know that we are so excited that they are at camp and that if they needed anything we were here for them. Camp is a lonely place year round so having the camp staff here really makes us happy!

We decided to show our appreciation for all the good works they will be doing this summer with some chocolate love!

Unfortunately I burned some, so they didn't get this many

I made sure there wasn't really any hair

More goodies will definitely come their way!

Not only does summer time mean camp is starting but it also means more time on my bicycle!! This weekend I was able to go put some miles on it :) Unfortunately I didn’t prepare myself and ended up running out of water along the way. I started my ride only thinking I’d do about 15 miles or so. This is an old route that I have done in the past. I really like it because within the first five miles I feel like I’ve already gotten such a tough workout; it’s much harder than the normal cruising route I take. This was also the perfect time to test my new heart rate monitor and gps!

Forerunner 110

Since I didn’t pack well enough I stopped about 12 miles in at a local gas station, went in with my bike get-up on, all a schweaty mess, and got some Gatorade. I bribed myself with Gatorade and orange sport beans in an effort to get some more miles out of my ride and it was really hot, so I need to refuel.

Ahh! A break

After the short break I added about eight more miles then came back to the gas station and filled up with some water and completed my route. At the end I stopped by a local bike shop to see if they could put another water bottle carrier on my frame, but something had broken off and it wasn’t fixable, next time the camelback is coming!

The route ended up being a bit of an adventure itself. I feel like I could write a whole blog on just rural riding. This will be the last time I ride that route because at one point the road turned into pot holed gravel. It was scary!  I ended up riding a little over 26 miles and it was 94 degrees out when I was finished – hot hot hot!

The rest of the weekend has included meetings out of town, puppy play dates, and movie watching. Yesterday I had to leave early in the morning to get to a board meeting and I was running a little behind when I ran into this….

GRRR!!!

There’s nothing worse than living with an automatic gate when it stops working. It’s just not something you plan for when you’re running behind.

Yesterday we got a sprinkler and the dogs got to run around in it. We thought they would love it, but they didn’t get too close. They didn’t like the pool much either, so I think we had our hopes up a little to high! Oh well, it’ll be another hot day today, so maybe we’ll try it again!

"I'm hot so maybe I'll get close to it..."

"eh, we'll stay back here"

I’m looking forward to all the little kiddos getting here today. But in the meantime I will be cleaning and doing laundry woo wee! And if I’m lucky, getting some homework in there! Hooray for first day of camp!!!!

Time for a get-a-way!

Yesterday I headed down to South Carolina for a trip to visit my parents. I am traveling solo because Sam has staff training these two weeks. It was nice to be able to get away for a lit bit before the chaos of summer hits. At work I am in charge of a summer program and it is going to be very hectic and busy. I’m looking forward to it but I knew I could benefit from some down time before all that started.

I took off yesterday with my one carry on (a miracle!) and a load of magazines to read.

While at the airport I was able to catch up on some of my favorite blogs … www.fitbottomedgirls.com www.pbfingers.com http://lifeofblyss.com  and www.chocolatecoveredkatie.com and a few others! After about an hour or so we were able to board the plane. This was a tiny plane, my head almost hit the ceiling once I got on! There was a storm coming through at the airport we were supposed to arrive in so we had to sit on the runway for about forty-five minutes. The lady next to me wasn’t happy about this! It was kind of awkward with her huffs and puffs but I tuned her out with some Dave Matthews and homework.

We finally took off and arrived in Charlotte. The airport was crazy! I think everyone in the airport was running for their life! I just tried to stay out of the way. As I was waiting for Mom there were some police officers who were blowing whistles to keep traffic flow in order. This guy took his job wayy to seriously!

Mom picked me up at the airport and we were off to eat and shop! We went to a couple places then it came a down pour so we decided to head home. I needed to finish an online test so I wanted to take care of that before dinner. Unfortunately there was a glitch with our online school system and so I didn’t get to get it out of the way. Instead we headed for some Mexican food, yum and of course a pretty drink :) This hit the spot!

Yum!!!

We don’t have many plans for the weekend, just hanging out and relaxing! Just what the doctor ordered :)  But I do kinda miss this face…
